Having spent the weekend putting up a scaffolding tower and trying to complete various diy projects now the builders are nearly finished has proved to my husband and I that we really are on our way to the big 50! Much huffing and puffing followed the climb to the top of the tower and then a sit-down was necessary before picking up the trowel!

oh the joys of getting older … what happened to the days of endless energy and non-creaking knees!!!!!!!!!!

Arghhhhh … I thought I had broken my nose again on saturday when I leant round the door to reach in to get my sunglasses, turning to my left to leave the room not realising that the door frame was between me and my exit!

The impact was unexpectedly forceful as I was in a bit of a hurry … my eyes streamed with spontaneous tears and my nose throbbed like a good’un. The pain took me straight back to 2005 when the lovely Laura actually did BREAK MY NOSE!

FLASHBACK TIME!

“It’s Murder on the Dancefloor! (sadly a true story!)

At approximately 11.35pm on Saturday 25th September 2005 at our local Harvest Ball Kathryn and Laura (yes, the very same business partner!) were involved in a catastrophic collision on the dance floor!

As Laura bent down to adjust her shoe, Kathryn stupidly and inadvisedly bent down to say something to her. Unfortunately, at that particular moment Laura, suddenly inspired by the music, swooshed upwards in a flamboyant flick unaware that Kathryn’s nose was blocking her path!

BOOM!! The head and nose met with awesome force. Kathryn staggered, dazed momentarily and then, helped by her husband made her way back to her seat. Fortunately, fortified by a couple of glasses of wine she managed to make it through until the end of the evening. The added bonus was that the dark route home was illuminated by the glow from the throbbing nose!

The pain and swelling failed to subside and by the following wednesday it was decided that a trip to the doctors would be a good idea. Convinced that she would be dismissed as a malingerer, Kathryn was shocked to discover that the diagnosis was a probable fracture! Consquently, she has been given an appointment to see the consultant and we wait with baited to breath to hear the outcome!

Moral of the story: Always ensure that you wear full body armour when contemplating a night out on the dance floor – it’s dangerous world out there you know!

UPDATE! Thursday 29th September

After a thorough examination by a very nice consultant, he concluded, that THE NOSE IS FRACTURED! It has been given a week’s reprieve after which, if it hasn’t returned to it’s previous glory, there’s nothing for it but a trip to the theatre for a spot of manipulation under general anaesthetic! Ooooh errr!

STOP PRESS – Thursday 6th October 2005

“And it’s nasal manipulation for you madam! Doctor’s Orders!

And the verdict is “Off to theatre for you” – Arghhhhhhhhh! So, come monday morning the pliers are out for a spot of realignment! The theory is apparently that the bone just clicks back into place and bob’s your uncle! Fingers crossed.

The Conclusion of an Unfortunate Incident!

The Deed is Done – 10th October 2005

At 10am this morning I am pleased to report that “the nose” was manipulated back into it’s original position and is now restored to it’s former (considerable) glory plus a bit of swelling and bruising for good measure!

Hopefully the end of a sad and sorry saga and please be assured that more care will be taken on the dance floor in future to prevent a repeat performance (especially when I’m in close proximity to my business partner!).”

Thankfully this time I think it was just a case of my nose and ego being bruised but I will take better care to watch out for doorframes in future!

Just returned from a parent’s information evening at school for university applications. Now I know having just had my elder daughter start at uni last September that I should be fairly jiggy with the system but I sat there listening to everything that was being said … and I have to admit to feeling rather overwhelmed.

The reason for this is that my daughter is very focussed and self-sufficient and I was not really aware of just how much of the process she actually did for herself … I know with my son, it will be a different story! At the moment, we are actually a little ahead of the game … courses (the right ones I hope!) chosen, open days at the university’s booked … but I can anticipate that we may well be overtaken and left wallowing around in late-onset confusion and disorganisation as time goes on.

As I said above … arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

why are teenagers so much more tiring than babies!

Granted it will be more of a “big sigh” with me after having 4 of the little blighters! Lovely though they are, she adds hastily!

Son No 1 (but child no 3) is now 17 and has begun working shifts for a catering company … last night he was working at a wedding but it didn’t finish til 2am and then he had a half an hour journey home. Yes, I know the sensible thing would be to have gone to bed … but NO, the old parental caring thing kicked in and I went to bed at 2.30am once he was home safe and well!

Yes, ’tis true I have been through all this twice before … I have tried to go to bed and sleep through trusting they will find their way home safely but my automatic parenting body clock always, and I mean, always wakes me up at the time they are due in and then I can’t get back to sleep once they are home as I’ve already had several hours kip! I have tried staying awake and then going to bed just before they are due in so I will be so tired and will fall asleep easily – never works! I have found that the only thing that really and truly works for me me is to just stay up until they are home!

Thankfully instead of thinking I’m a total freak, having spoken to other mothers of teenage children, I have realised that I am not alone! Yes, there are some who can just issue a key and say “see you in the morning” but by far the majority are the same as me … not quite able to detach the final remains of the umbilical cord inspite all good intentions … it’s just an involuntary reflex that cannot be switched off!

Arghhhhhhhhh … I need a nap!

If say this cloud doesn’t give any opportunity for normal air services to resume and then to top it all the second volcano blew, would the UK ever be able to become a self-sufficient island again or are we all too dependant on instant-this, instant-that, get everything society?

Is the prospect of empty supermarket shelves enough to send us all rushing to the garden centre to turn our lawns and flower beds into John and Barbara Good’s allotment or are we all just too darn “busy” (or do we mean lazy?) these days?

Well I guess if you are in Europe, you just know you will have a mighty long terrestrial trek home in this current volcanic cloud situation but at least you will get home. What about those who have a loved one stuck further afield with no prospect of getting home in the immediate future!

We currently have a close relative trying to get home from a business trip in Hong Kong and he is in severe danger of missing his child’s first birthday! Arrggghhhh … please dear volcano, please stop blowing your top so he can get home!

There’s serious sadness in our house this evening as the beautiful CoCo has breathed her last. Our gorgeous hamster CoCo who has rather remarkably survived 3 years in our house finally gave up the ghost today and shuffled off her mortal hamster coil to the big hamster heaven that we all know is out there. We will all miss her terribly and will be holding a small memorial service in our garden tomorrow morning. As my daughters have just said we will remember her most for her beautiful colour, nibbling fingers and using her cage as a set of monkey bars in her endeavours to escape. We loved you lots CoCo – Laurax

one embarrassed husband!

Oh yes … I am married to a man who is in charge of Health & Safety on a multi-million pound building site but who, in a moment of madness decided to try and pull out a branch that had got stuck in a wood-chipping machine. Thankfully he turned it off before he inadvisedly put his arm inside but what he hadn’t realised was that the internal workings would think it necessary to tighten around his arm making an escape impossible!!!!!

After a moment of grim realisation, he began to shout! Unfortunately the only person within earshot was one of the builders who are currently doing our extension thereby making it unlikely that the embarrassing disaster would remain “in the family”! “How much will you pay me to not turn the machine on” was the initial response … which under different circumstances might have raised a smile! This was swiftly followed by a lot of huffing and puffing as the builder tried to work out how to release him. The reluctant conclusion was that it might have to be a fire brigade job … even more embarrassing! Thankfully he eventually worked out how to bring the situation to an end … albeit millimetre by millimetre!

One very relieved husband later confessed to the incident … thankfully still in one piece but more than ever so slightly mortified
