I can’t believe that just happened …

OMG, guess whose husband had to be rescued from the internal workings of a wood chipping machine today!

Guess who’s a REALLY happy bunny?

I’m sooooooo happy – just managed to book tickets to see an all time fav band of mine Del Amitri at the Shepherds Bush O2.  I just loved Justin Currie (lead singer) … my poor husband will just have to put up with me swooning alot and singing too loudly I’m afraid – roll on May 25th!  Have a good weekend all – Laurax

please clean up the internet … SOMEONE!

Well, there’s no need to bother about protecting your children from stranger danger from perverts in the park anymore … because they now have a direct line into your home!

Our jaws were on the floor when we heard about this new craze sweeping the internet … Chat Routlette.   Apparently hailed by the “yoof of today” as a great laugh, our eyebrows were definitely raised when we typed it into a Facebook search and we were greeted by a photo of a man on very intimate terms with a melon!   The Facebook group was as far as we got as we both spontaneously tumbled into a middle-aged giddy shocked spin!

That many take screenshots of the strangers they meet on Chat Roulette and post them on these Facebook groups for even more of the world to see made us realise just how far these things can reach and how unstoppable they have been allowed to be.

The article in the link below was featured in the Sunday Times  … definitely for us as parents, Chat Roulette is something to worry about.  We cetainly had no idea and although reluctant to feed the site publicity, knowledge is power when it comes to protecting our children.

Please, darling, say hello to the webcam wacko – Times Online.

You are kidding me!!

Please excuse my rant of the week … but it has to be done!!  We were very lucky to go and see “Oliver” last weekend, so it was the usual excitement from my girls about “going into London on the train” and “having a HUGE box of giant buttons” during the performance.  We all had a fab time and the show was brilliant but as we made our way back to Charing Cross station to catch our train I gasped in horror when I saw this …

This is an open-air urinal!!!  Where men can go and stand an have a pee for all to see!!!  Sorry I can’t help the exclamation marks!  Apparently the “problem” of men urinating anywhere and everywhere in London is spiralling out of control – hence these urinal “pods”.  Well I’m sorry but this is the very last thing I want to see and more importantly, for my two children to see!  And to be honest, how sexist is it anyway.  Is it just me or is the world just going mad?

Quite frankly, it’s disgusting and whoever came up with the idea should be ashamed and it’s really put me off going to London of an evening!   Ok – rant over, for now anyway – Laura x

now I thought I was quite up to speed with the perils of modern technology …

After having already been through the joys of teenagerdom 3 times and being pretty useful with computers and all,  I thought I was on top of things … but NO, I was completely thrown the other day when I was told all about pictochat BY MY EIGHT YEAR OLD!

I had absolutely no idea that the DS console was anything other than just a games console that had no external (however small) connection at all.  Apparently ANYONE with another DS within a radius of 65 feet (in practice it can be up to 300ft) of a console can access one of the 4 chatrooms thereby allowing unknown users to ”chat” to any other console user within that radius.  My son had previously used a Gameboy and I, maybe  naively. thought the DS was exactly the same type of standalone games unit … it  never occurred to me that it would be any different.  Admittedly my fault for making the assumption but as far as I am aware this function is not overtly advertised.  I understand that it is also not possible to disable pictochat.

Now, whether or not the risk of my child being exposed to inappropriate content from undesirable contacts is very small – opinions vary, it depends on what you read - my major concern is that my eight year old has knowledge of chatrooms, making profiles etc … infact taking “baby steps” to future social networking.

This is not what I want at all … why oh why can’t they just be left to be children or is there no such thing as a child any more, are they are all just mini-adults viewed as a commercial opportunity to the world of business?  This is to say nothing of the fact that you are relentlessly told to warn your children of the dangers of strangers, only to find they are having a direct line into your home and potential access to your child without your knowledge and without invitation!

Arghhhh … parenting 20 years ago was complicated enough, these days it’s nigh on impossible!  Needless to say the console has now “unfortunately been mislaid” … not that it’s absence has even been noticed!

YES!!!! I got Michael Buble tickets!

Ohhhh, how I have wanted to see him again after a fab concert about 3 or 4 years ago!  It was at the Hammersmith Apollo and he was fairly unknown at the time … but we all just fell in love with his voice and he was SO funny!  A real entertainer.

So it was a great disappointment when I tried and failed to get tickets to his shows this summer and I had reluctantly slumped away with a grump knowing that I’d have to wait iiiions to see him again!

BUT NO! Bless the boy,  yesterday tickets were released for further shows in October … and guess what – VICTORY WAS MINE!  My only problem now is the bun fight that has now ensued for the spare ticket!

Kathryn gets pampered to within an inch of her her life … and loved it!

I’m not known for my regular visits to the hairdresser, but after my trip to Sulis London, I may well be changing the habit of a lifetime!

I was given a very warm welcome when I arrived at the London salon for my cut and blow dry and I was made to feel instantly at ease.  The salon has a very personal feel unlike many larger salons and after the introductions, the charming Luigi took an indepth look at my hair while he asked me what kind of look I was after.  This was followed by a very relaxing hairwash sitting in an amazing massage chair that, to be honest, I was reluctant to leave!

The cutting then started in earnest and Luigi worked his magic!  I am notorious for my “not-very-regular-visits” to the hairdressers but I have to confess, after this indulgent treat, I will be booking myself in for a return visit tout-de-suite!  Great cut, great pampering and a thoroughly enjoyable experience – a definite 10 out of 10 for me!

just how much self-control did that take!

We have just returned from a lovely birthday celebration meal for my son.  Despite being in the company of pure gluttony, I was being very good but did have the slightest moment of weakness when the pudding menu arrived and guess what was at the top … only my very favourite STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING!

Despite a flash of “go on, you know you want to …”, an intense burst of self-control came over me and I said “no thank you, I will pass on pudding!”   And boy, did I regret it when I had to sit opposite my son’s friend as she lovingly licked every last morcel from her plate!

So, although I’m feeling very virtuous that I didn’t have one … there’s a part of me reeeeally wishes I had!
